PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal) occurs when strep triggers a misdirected immune response that results in inflammation in the child’s brain. The child quickly begins to exhibit life changing symptoms such as anxiety, tics, personality changes, OCD, aggressive behaviors, decline in math and handwriting abilities, restrictive eating, sensory sensitivities and more.
PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) is similar to PANDAS but the infectious trigger or environmental factors that misdriect immune response are not caused by strep.
